Current Initiatives

Recently acknowledged by the American Associations of Museums as the first museum in the United States to receive accreditation for a fifth consecutive time, Winterthur strives for excellence in all of its endeavors. The quality programs that Winterthur provides are rooted in the demographics and interests of our audience. To this end, Winterthur’s staff has been deeply involved in the planning and implementation of several projects to complement our existing programs and expand our offerings to the public. We welcome you to explore specific projects below.

The Museum

Sharing knowledge and educating the public are the chief aims of all museums. Winterthur accomplishes this mission in many ways, most significantly through public exhibitions that focus on material culture and how careful research, scientific investigation, and interpretation can bring them to life. The Garden

Winterthur’s 1,000-acres encompass rolling hills, streams, meadows, and forests. H. F. du Pont selected the choicest plants from around the world to enhance the natural setting, arranged them in lyrical color combinations and carefully orchestrated a succession of bloom from late January to November. The Library

The library was established in 1952 to furnish staff, students, and the general public with research materials. It has since become a recognized center for advanced study and is dedicated to the understanding and appreciation of America’s artistic, cultural, social, and intellectual history from colonial times into the twentieth century. Educational Programs & Activities

Winterthur recognizes the importance of the arts, not just in teaching current and future generations about the past, but also in instilling in our young visitors certain skills that will enrich their lives. A 2006 article in Child Magazine names Winterthur as one of the top-ten art museums for kids. We are proud that our educational programs reach thousands of children, both on site and off, and that they have a positive impact on their overall learning and social development. Signature Events

The du Pont tradition of hospitality continues at Winterthur, where we host several of the area's largest and most exciting events. These events, like the Point-to-Point Steeplechase and the Delaware Antique Show are also Winterthur's largest fundraisers. Learn more about sponsoring signature events.

Endowment

A gift to the endowment provides funds for the perpetual care of the museum and library collections as well as the garden and ensures that our excellent educational programs will continue to be offered in the future. Learn more about Winterthur's endowment.
