At a time when few professional careers were open to women, the world of illustration welcomed them. The rapid advancements in printing in the late 1800s and early 1900s inundated households with paper-books, magazines, calendars, postcards, prints, and advertising ephemera which all cried out for appealing pictures. The illustrations of women artists during this time typically featured women and children and many like Rose O'Neill's Kewpies became iconic.
