JOB TITLE:  School Program Guide

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:  The School Program Guide leads students from Pre-K to 12th grade, chaperones, and teachers through on-site school programs that use Museum, Garden, Conservation Labs, and School Program spaces, and travels to schools, libraries, and community centers to present outreach programs with objects from the Demonstration Collection. The Guide provides interpretation that addresses the needs of various age groups, learning styles, and knowledge levels of school visitors and is mindful of studentsí safety and comfort and the safety and security of the collections. The Guide demonstrates enthusiasm, flexibility, and confidence while working with students of all ages and while teaching concepts related to art, history, and science. He/she may also be called upon to assist with the development and implementation of custom school programs and teacher workshops and provides informal training and guidance to newer guides.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:  Minimum: High School diploma. Preferred: Bachelorís degree, preferably in art, art history, American history or education. Minimum: 2 years (with HS diploma) of paid or unpaid experience teaching or interacting with children. Detail oriented Ė meaning able to process training information received verbally or in written form and reconstruct this information during school programs. Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills. Flexible. Good customer service skills. Must be able to submit a monthly availability calendar with an average of 13 days per month. Must be able to guide school program visitors during hours scheduled for up to 4 hours a day. Must be able to stand for up to 2 hours without a break. Must be able to sit on the floor or on child-sized chairs to lead hands-on interactions with students. Must be able to ride elevators and able to climb a staircase of 25 steps. Must be able to maintain visual surveillance of objects and people while on tour. Must be able to work outdoors in the Garden. Must be able to speak and hear in a normal range. Must be able to travel for school and library outreach programs with School Programs staff and carry 25 pound bag of Demonstration Collection objects. Preferred: 4 years (with HS diploma) of paid or unpaid experience in museum guiding or in teaching, or six months experience in museum guiding or teaching with Bachelorís degree in art, art history, history or education. Knowledge of child-development ages 3-18. Spanish proficiency Knowledge of art, American history, decorative arts, physical science, and /or horticulture.. Describe the nature and amount of experience needed to perform the duties of this position.
