JOB TITLE:  Cataloging Assistant, Jan-July 2015, full-time

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:  Will work on the grant-funded development of the Boston Furniture Archive, an online database of furniture produced in and around Boston between 1630 and 1930. This staff member will work on content development for the Archive to create and edit object records and digital image files. Specifically, the Cataloging Assistant will review object files currently archived in the Winterthur Library and identify Boston furniture in trade publications; use spreadsheet software to create or revise catalog entries for these objects, including maker, place of origin, date, materials, attributes and construction techniques, description, and history of ownership; and upload the spreadsheets to the Archive using CONTENTdm. The Cataloging Assistant will also scan photographic prints and/or other images of furniture and edit them for online publication.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:  Minimum education: BA/BS in art history, history, anthropology, or related discipline. Minimum knowledge/skills: Strong computer skills, including experience working with spreadsheets and using, editing, and/or creating cataloging or database systems. Meticulous attention to detail. Excellent organizational skills. Strong writing ability. Excellent communication skills. Willingness to follow instructions carefully and communicate regarding the same. Capacity to work independently and in a team. Neat handwriting. Knowledge of professional museum standards and experience in museum procedures, including methods of documentation. Ability to research efficiently on decorative arts topics. Sufficient stamina to work at computer for extended periods, with appropriate breaks. Ability to lift and reach objects overhead. Ability to maneuver in small and tight spaces. Climbing and balancing on ladders to reach objects and supplies. Occasional stooping, kneeling, and crouching to reach materials. Minimum experience: One year of experience using, editing, and/or creating computerized cataloging systems, databases, and/or spreadsheets. One year of experience working in a museum and/or library setting.
