Fashionable Furnishings

On the Fashionable Furnishings tour, you can imagine yourself as a special visitor to Winterthur in the 1930s as you tour the gracious guest bedrooms, each furnished entirely to a different style period. The collections emphasize high-style furniture dating from the early 1700s through the mid-1800s and feature beds dressed with colorful whole-cloth quilts and embroidered bed curtains. You will also see a dramatic dining room decorated with impressive empire furniture and gilded copper lustre dishes as well as the large and inviting Memorial Library, lined floor-to-ceiling with books and providing delightful views from windows overlooking the Winterthur Garden. Local visitors in particular will appreciate seeing a room from a Wilmington, Delaware, home that is filled with furniture, maps, and images from Wilmington, New Castle, and Odessa, Delaware. Special collections include early American glass, Liverpool jugs, a large array of “impolitical” prints documenting the increasing tensions between Britain and her North American colonies in the years leading up to the American Revolution, and a room filled with memorabilia honoring America’s great founding father Benjamin Franklin.

Floors 1, 3 & 8; 1 hour; please call 800.448.3883 or email tourinfo@winterthur.org for more information.

American Interiors

When the du Ponts resided at Winterthur, their family bedrooms were located on the seventh floor, and those rooms are now included on the American Interiors tour. On this tour, you will visit Ruth du Pont’s private retreat, filled with her delicate federal-style furnishings, and H. F. du Pont’s bedroom and office suite, the nerve center of the Winterthur estate, filled with the sturdy New England Queen Anne and Chippendale–style furniture he favored. Featured collections on this tour include delightful miniature furnishings, children’s tea sets, and sample pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries in the Miniature Stair Hall. The Billiard Room, also on the tour, displays the only known American billiard table made before 1825. Collections of needlework, silver, painted tin, drafting and surveying instruments, and jewelry are highlighted, along with magnificent mid-18th-century furniture crafted in Newport, Rhode Island, and outstanding examples of painted furniture from Baltimore made in the early years of the new nation.
