Accessibility

Winterthur is committed to providing excellent service to all visitors to the museum and garden. We recognize the diversity of the public’s needs and abilities.

Most of our buildings are accessible for persons with disabilities, but not all areas of the house can accommodate wheelchairs. The garden is accessible for wheelchairs. Our Group Tours contact will work with you to create a tour experience that accommodates all of your group’s needs and provides a wonderful experience.

Wheelchair and Stroller Accessibility

Shuttles, garden trams, and most walking paths are wheelchair and stroller accessible. Wheelchairs and strollers are available, free of charge, at the Visitor Center, Galleries Reception Atrium, and the Museum Store for visitor convenience. Please note that a companion is needed to push wheelchairs. All of Winterthur’s exhibition galleries are wheelchair accessible. The Introductory Tour and most other tours of the house are also accessible (some restrictions may apply).

Moving About the Grounds

Despite Winterthur’s hilly site, most public areas and historic buildings are accessible. Please refer to our garden map, which identifies accessible areas and more steeply graded paths. During regular public hours, a shuttle bus stops at the Visitor Center, the Museum Store, and the museum entrance. The shuttle is equipped with a hydraulic life and one wheelchair securement device. Accessible parking is also available. Vehicles with official permits may use designated parking spaces next to the Visitor Center and near the Galleries Reception Atrium.

Visitors can board garden trams for narrated tours of the garden. All trams are equipped with ramps and wheelchair securement devices; however, due to size and ground clearance, some motorized wheelchairs cannot be safely accommodated. Please call 800.448.3883 for more information.

Auxiliary Aids

Auxiliary aids are also available for guided tours and special presentations. School, college, and adult programs can be adapted to specific needs by prior arrangement.

A more detailed description of physical access and aids is available. For more information, please contact the Winterthur Information and Tours Office at 800.448.3883, or click here.
