Silversmiths to the Nation: Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner, 1808-1842 is the first exhibition to focus solely on the work of Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner and their influence on the silversmith trade. Fletcher & Gardiner were the premier silversmiths of their time, renowned for their dramatic presentation pieces for civic and military heroes as well as stylish household silver and jewelry. The exhibition will include a selection of swords, medals, commemorative works, tea sets, pitchers, dinner services, a candelabrum, vases, and flatware in silver and gold.

Vanity and Virtue: Personal Grooming in America

This jewel-box exhibition explores how Americans washed, shaved, dressed their hair, and used cosmetics in the past. Filled with objects both familiar and strange, from wig curlers to an early toothbrush, Vanity and Virtue reveals many of Winterthur’s objects that are not normally seen.

Fall in the Winterthur Garden is as colorful as spring! Lavenders, pinks, yellows, reds and blues pop in the landscape. Asters, perennial begonias, colchicum, sternbergia, chamomile, water lilies, water lotus, iris and anemones bloom throughout the grounds. Dogwood berries, beauty berries and sapphire berries have yet to be devoured by hungry birds. Abundant quinces remind us of the opalescent blooms we enjoyed just months before. Butterflies are industrious. Temperatures are cooler. Jeannette Lindvig, garden guide specialist, will lead you to the blooming stars of the Winterthur garden. She will share her favorite secret garden corners and often overlooked vistas and pathways. September is a perfect, temperate month. Enjoy a guided, garden walk of discovery and experience for yourself just how rich the garden can be in autumn.
