Come and admire the beautiful peony collection of herbaceous and tree peonies in shades of pink, white, crimson, and yellow. This includes the collection of A.P.Saunders hybrids. We will discuss the history, care, and maintenance of herbaceous and tree peonies.

The Winterthur Garden is home to an impressive array of grand old trees, several of which lay claim to the title of “Delaware State Champion” for their respective species. Join Winterthur’s Arborist Superintendent, John Salata, on an insightful walking tour highlighting these venerable giants of the garden. John will provide a glimpse into the inner workings of what managing and maintaining Winterthur’s arboreal population entails, and will offer practical information and tips on caring for the trees on your property.

Perennial Groundcovers of the Pinetum

Wednesday, June 4
Meet at 11:30am at the Visitor Center garden tram pick up spot for a speical tram run to the Magnolia Bend stop.
Led by Jim Pirhalla, Winterthur horticulturist

As part of the restoration of the Pinetum, ground cover plantings were added not only to help define and offer direction to some of the walking paths, but also to enhance the feel and texture of a conifer forest. Come see some familiar, as well as some not so familiar, garden plants and learn how particular choices in the design were made.

Deer Bait: Alternatives to Plants Deer Love

Learn how to manage your deer problems by avoiding those plants that are frequently damaged by deer and selecting plants that are unattractive to them. Jessica will also cover alternative ways (i.e. repellents, etc.) to prevent deer from browsing and damaging your plants.

The Winterthur cut flower garden covered over eight acres and was tended by fifteen gardeners. Come hear John Feliciani talk about his experiences working in the cut flower garden beginning in 1960. John’s father and grandfather supervised this lost treasure beginning in the 1920’s. We will start at the greenhouse area and talk about their use in the production of fruit and flowers.
