"The trees are the ‘characters’ that make this garden,” says John Feliciani, Winterthur’s director of horticulture, who describes himself as “the person in charge of everything growing outside.” But Feliciani, who has worked on the Winterthur grounds for more than 35 years, is clearly partial to his trees.
“I love them for the way they enhance and define the landscape. Their sturdy trunks and spreading limbs create the structure for this marvelous estate,” he says. “Trees also serve our environment. Their roots help the aquifers by enabling rainwater to penetrate the ground. But more importantly, their leaves absorb carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we humans need.”
