  • Cherry blossoms:  The autumn rosebud cherry (Prunus subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’) is blooming along Garden Lane at the far side of the Pinetum.
  • Brilliant berries:  The bright red berries of willow-leaf cotoneaster give a festive look to the fence on Sycamore Hill.
  • Witch hazel:  Common witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) unfurls the narrow yellow ‘ribbons’ of its blooms in Enchanted Woods and at the parking lot wall behind the Carriage House.

  • Brilliant berries:  The bright red berries of willow-leaf cotoneaster give a festive look to the fence on Sycamore Hill.
  • Crabapples:  The flowering crabapples (Malus species and cultivars) at the edge of the Pinetum and the edge of the Sundial Garden are putting on an end of season show of lovely red fruits.  The birds and squirrels are feasting on them, so the show won’t last much longer.

  • Lilacs!:  Lilacs (Syringa species) are re-blooming in the Sundial Garden.
  • Witch Hazel:  The thin yellow ‘ribbons’ of common witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) flowers can be found at the Visitor Center Garden Tram stop, at the Traffic Circle edge of Enchanted Woods, and at the Quarry overlook seating area.
  • Camellias:  Some of the camellias (Camellia cultivars)  are in bloom on the upper side of The Cottage.
  • Toad lilies:  Masses of the speckled flowers of toad lilies (Tricyrtis varieties) are lining the upper gravel path of the Glade Garden and the Sycamore Hill side of the upper Quarry garden.  They are also blooming in other areas of the garden.

  • What a Show! Autumn Crocus:  Not a true crocus, the lavender-pink blossoms of autumn crocus (Colchicum byzantium & Colchicum ‘Giant’) are blooming profusely on Oak Hill and at the base of the witch hazel tree at the lower side of The Cottage.  They can also be found among the grasses along both sides of Gray Building Drive just past the intersection with Cutting Garden Lane.
  • Toad lilies:  Masses of the speckled flowers of toad lilies (Tricyrtis varieties) are lining the upper gravel path of the Glade Garden and the Sycamore Hill side of the upper Quarry garden.  They are also blooming in other areas of the garden.
  • Asters:  The tiny daisy-flowers of asters (Symphyotricum species) are filling the Gardens & Estate with billows of white, pale blue, and lavender.
  • Golden carpet:  Brown’s Meadow is aglow with late blooming plume goldenrod (Solidago species).

  • What a Show! Autumn Crocus:  Not a true crocus, the lavender-pink blossoms of autumn crocus (Colchicum byzantium & Colchicum ‘Giant’) are blooming profusely on Oak Hill and at the base of the witch hazel tree at the lower side of The Cottage.  They can also be found among the grasses in the field along Gray Building Drive just past the intersection with Cutting Garden Lane.
  • Toad lilies:  Masses of the speckled flowers of toad lilies (Tricyrtis varieties) are lining the upper gravel path of the Glade Garden and the Sycamore Hill side of the upper Quarry garden.  They are also blooming in other areas of the garden.
  • White Clouds Everywhere:  Frothy white blossoms of white snake root (Ageratina altissima/ Eupatorium rugosum) are in abundance throughout the Gardens & Estate.  The airy white spikes of fairy candles (Bugbane/Actaea acerina) are lighting up the ‘triangle’ in Azalea Woods and the edge of Enchanted Woods.  White wood asters (Eurybia divaricata/Aster divaricatus) are blooming throughout the Gardens & Estate And the meadows are also dotted with the tiny white daisies of asters (Symphiotrichum species).

The Goldenrod is bountiful in Brown’s Woods Meadow

Check these out:

  • Autumn Crocus:  Not a true crocus, the lavender-pink blossoms of autumn crocus (Colchicum byzantium & Colchicum ‘Giant’) are blooming profusely on Oak Hill and at the base of the witch hazel tree at the lower side of The Cottage.  They can also be found among the grasses in the field along Gray Building Drive just past the intersection with Cutting Garden Lane.
  • White Clouds Everywhere:  Frothy white blossoms of white snake root (Ageratina altissima/ Eupatorium rugosum) are in abundance throughout the Gardens & Estate.  The airy white spikes of fairy candles (Bugbane/Actaea acerina) are lighting up the ‘triangle’ in Azalea Woods and the edge of Enchanted Woods.  And the meadows are dotted with the tiny white daisies of asters (Symphiotrichum species).
  • Beautiful Begonias:  The pale pink and white hardy begonias (Begonia grandis) are blooming in Enchanted Wood, creating a magical ground-level pastel mist.
  • Golden Glow:  The waves of goldenrod (Solidago species) in the fields are echoed by the golden yellow black-eyed-Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) and ligularia (Ligularia sibirica var. speciosa) blooming in the Quarry.
  • Mushrooms in autumn colors:  Clusters of orange mushrooms decorate the ground around the trees at the exit from the Visitor Center patio to the walking path.
  • Throughout:  White wood asters (Eurybia divaricata/Aster divaricatus) are blooming throughout the Gardens & Estate.  The small white daisies are creating a low-lying white cloud at the Visitor Center Garden Tram stop.

Check these out:

  • Autumn Crocus:  Not a true crocus, the lavender-pink blossoms of autumn crocus (Colchicum byzantium & Colchicum ‘Giant’) are blooming profusely on Oak Hill and at the base of the witch hazel tree at the lower side of The Cottage.  They can also be found among the grasses in the field along Gray Building Drive just past the intersection with Cutting Garden Lane.
  • White Clouds:  The airy white spikes of fairy candles (Bugbane/Actaea acerina) are lighting up the ‘triangle’ in Azalea Woods and the edge of Enchanted Woods.
  • Beautiful Begonias:  The pale pink and white hardy begonias (Begonia grandis) are blooming in Enchanted Wood, creating a magical ground-level pastel mist.
  • Golden Glow:  The waves of goldenrod (Solidago species) in the fields are echoed by the golden yellow black-eyed-Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) and ligularia (Ligularia sibirica var. speciosa) blooming in the Quarry.
  • Mushrooms in autumn colors:  Clusters of orange mushrooms decorate the ground around the trees at the exit from the Visitor Center patio to the walking path.
  • Throughout:  White wood asters (Eurybia divaricata/Aster divaricatus) are blooming throughout the Gardens & Estate.  The small white daisies are creating a low-lying white cloud at the Visitor Center Garden Tram stop.

  • Beautiful Begonias:  The pale pink and white hardy begonias (Begonia grandis) are in full bloom in Enchanted Wood, creating a magical ground-level pastel mist.
  • Golden Glow:  The waves of goldenrod (Solidago species) in the fields are echoed by the golden yellow black-eyed-Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) and ligularia (Ligularia sibirica var. speciosa) blooming in the Quarry.

  • Beautiful Begonias:  The pale pink and white hardy begonias (Begonia grandis) are in full bloom in Enchanted Wood, creating a magical ground-level pastel mist.
  • Primary Colors:  The Quarry Garden is blooming in red cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), yellow black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), yellow ligularia (Ligularia sibirica var. speciosa), blue tube clematis (Clematis heracleiafolia var. davidiana), and purple great blue lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica).  Check out the butterflies visiting them for nectar.
