We often think in shades of yellows and oranges when we think of autumn. However many of the fall flowers at Winterthur are white and lavender. The native white wood aster, Aster divaricatus, is a tough plant and will colonize and brighten the shadiest woodland through the garden. Cimicifuga japnocia v. acerina, a Japanese bugbane is a nice complement with its spike of flowers. It can be found in the center of Azalea Woods and in Enchanted Woods. For a touch of lavender try Hosta lancifolia and Tricyrtis, toad-lily. They can both be found near the Reflecting Pool. The flowers of Hydrangea involucrata are just now opening in Enchanted Woods. Nearby on Oak Hill, Colchicum is in full flower.
