Bloom Report #31
August 3, 2022
89 F, Sunny

Check these out:
- Flowery welcome: The blooms of soft pink glossy abelia (Abelia x grandiflora0 and the white panicles of pee gee hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculate ‘Grandiflora’) are welcoming visitors at the entry gate.
- Brightest spot: Visit the east side of Oak Hill to see the dazzling bright red blossoms of the late blooming plumleaf azalea (Rhododendron prunifolium).
- The magic is starting: The light pink magic lilies (Lycoris squamigera) are starting to bloom at the Garden Tram stop near the Visitor Center and in other areas of the gardens.
- Panicle Hydrangeas: The pee gee hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata ‘Grandiflora’) are at their best at the entry gates and on Sycamore Hill. Their show is just starting on the Summer Shrub Slope.
- Escape the heat: The glade from the March Walk to the Icewell Terrace walk is an ocean of green ferns that, together with the tree canopy, create a cool oasis. Try it!
- Everywhere: But, listed only here:
- The tiny white-to-pale-pink daisies of fleabane (Erigeron annuus) are in petal fall throughout the Estate.
- White clover (Trifolium repens) in the fields and lawns is providing nectar and pollen for the pollinators and nitrogen for the soil.
